For the new artist residencies planned in the Gaobeidian district of Beijing a competition was held for which a duplicable unit with a fixed footprint of 50 m2 and a height of 10 m had to be designed. To cater for a wide range of artists, Three Shades contains different light conditions for various media. Through their flexible floorplan, the three levels can be used independently for a multitude of purposes such as exhibitions, performances, living and working. The irregular units can be combined in different typologies such as closed blocks with courtyards, rows, or individual volumes. These different configurations have been informally laid out on the foundations of the former existing buildings.
